Let them come, that we might rejoice
with no bridles to fear,
and better lend the primal voice
our ever-tingling ear.
Let the lupercal make its way,
that naked young with whips
might bless the girls with words of play
and wolf's lament on lips.
Cast down the master, let the slave
have his whim satisfied.
By command of Saturn we pave
horizons deep and wide!
If folly knocks, open the door!
Coy matron, why resist?
For Saturn, be our sacred whore!
Sing, love, dance, shake your fist!
First there was chaos, then came Night,
with Erebus, her kin.
Yet now we spurn their daughter, Light,
and seek chaotic din.
From cultivated fields to caves,
from palaces to sties,
from sandy seas to Ocean's waves,
we celebrate likewise.
Be quick, and snatch a kiss from life:
order will rise again,
and a quiet time will be rife
to say: "I lived, but fain".
For an older time. In the strict age of Rome, Saturnalia were the time when a slave, otherwise eligible to death if he farted without being allowed, could mock his masters without fear of reprisal. A time when madness descended and everyone was like transported on another planet. Habits got more lenient in that debauchery pot that the late empire was, but Saturnalia, now Carnival, were again a much needed time during the dark ages, when the asswipes of the social ladder, paesants, revelled in corporal celebrations. Church let their its fist loosen up a bit (along with its anus).

What's carnival today? No longer this cathartic subversion of the cosmos. Just another occasion to drink one's ass off - but now with some silly costume on.

I threw the Lupercalia in even though they were another festival, 'cause it was pretty cool as well, and I'd love if something like that existed today (officially, of course).

Meh.
